How do I Conduct Research?

Introduction:
The successful completion of student research activities is not an accident. Research is a complex process that asks students to apply their critical thinking skills at all steps in this process. The ability to define a relevant topic, collect and evaluate quality resources that connect directly to the area of student inquiry, the synthesis of these resources and student analysis, and the creation of a final product need guidance and development.

Below are resources that clearly outline this process and give concrete suggestions to students that will assist them in the development of their research skills.
.
  • The Research Process. From Rutgers University, NJ, Writing in Rutgers Education (WIRE). This resource is a multi-page tutorial outlining the process of writing a research paper. Use tabs in menu at left or the “next” button at the bottom of each to to navigate the site.

  • Introduction to Research. From Cornell University Library. While this site has numerous links to specific Cornell University Library services, it does outline the full research process and can be very useful as a checklist of required components of quality research.
